Van Cleef & Arpels have created a watch for women that not only tells you the time, but also plays out the celestial ballet in front of your very eyes. Created specifically for SIHH 2018 and four years after unveiling the Midnight Planétarium™ watch, Van Cleef & Arpels is restyling this iconic creation, offering an original women’s edition to enrich the universe of Poetic Astronomy.
The watch itself boasts a 38-mm case of white gold set with diamonds, bezel set with diamonds and crown set with a diamond; all sparkle beautifully like the stars in the nights sky. The aventurine dial plays host to the inner planets; the terrestrials dance around the pink gold sun at their actual speeds, while the diamond moon rotates at the same average speed as its real-world counterpart. Mercury is comprised of pink mother of pearl, Venus in green enamel, and the Earth in turquoise. Rotating its way around the dial, and telling the owner the time of day, the shooting star in rhodium plated gold is a fitting accompaniment to these planetary pirouettes.
The back of the case is equally celestial, it combines white and pink gold, aventurine and sapphire glass displaying the day, month and year. It also hosts a white gold moon with serti neige style diamonds and an Earth in turquoise and ornamental stones in a harmonious style.
The self-winding mechanism and accompanying Planétarium were developed exclusively for Van Cleef & Arpels in combination with Christiaan van der Klaauw – they boast a 40-hour power reserve. Completing the watch is the strap: either a blue glitter alligator strap with white gold pin buckle set with diamonds, or a white gold bracelet also set with diamonds.
Other recent celestial watches by Van Cleef & Arpels include the Lady Arpels Nuit Féerique, the Lady Arpels Jour Féerique, and the Midnight Zodiac Lumineux Poetic Complications watches.
