Dunton Hot Springs
Replenishing waters and a repertoire of outdoor pursuits
Amid the rocky wilderness of Colorado sits this cluster of cabins that have been upgraded since Dunton's time as a mining town. There’s a whole series of picturesque and comfy lodgings including the Bjoerkmans (named after its Scandinavian builder), which has a wood-burning stove and unrestricted views of the nearby waterfall.
As you would expect, outdoor activities abound in summer and winter – the list is exhaustive, but hiking in the high San Juan Mountains and cross-country skiing routes devised by former Olympic skier Wendy Wagner stand out. Taking pride of place are the eponymous springs, infused with calcium bicarbonate – said to have healing powers and assist blood circulation.
