Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki
The “first permanent art gallery in the dominion”, still going strong
A staggering display of craftsmanship greets visitors to Auckland’s hero art gallery: soaring, intricate canopies, louvres and pillars made from 150 cubic metres of recycled kauri timber that is 400-600 years old. Across the original building – a French renaissance-esque Chateau – and the newer uniquely Kiwi addition, the gallery can display far more of its New Zealand historic and contemporary art collections, plus works by Maori and Pacific Island artists. International painting, sculpture and print collections dating from the 11th century are also on show.
